Central Texas brings a different set of pavement problems than Florida: expansive clay soils that move seasonally with moisture, and summer surface temperatures high enough to soften binder under standing loads. Base preparation and mix selection both need to account for it.

The soil is the story

Central Texas sits on expansive clay that swells and shrinks with seasonal moisture. That movement is the leading cause of pavement failure here, and it is a subgrade problem rather than a surface one — which means base preparation matters more than mix selection.

Summer heat

Surface temperatures get high enough to soften binder under standing loads. Where trailers, dumpsters or equipment sit in one place for long periods, that is a case for concrete rather than asphalt.
